RUOK? Day: A Simple Question Can Change a Life

This year’s theme is Ask R U OK? Any Day, because life happens every day.

Thursday 11 September is R U OK? Day, but the reality is that people around us, our friends, family, colleagues, neighbours, and community members face challenges throughout the year. Life’s ups and downs don’t follow a calendar, which is why it’s so important to feel confident checking in any day, not just today.

Why asking matters

Research shows that when people are regularly asked “Are you OK?”, they report stronger wellbeing and feel more supported. Many Australians are already stepping up with one in three that say they’ve been checking in with others more often over the past year. And while some of us may hesitate to start the conversation, the good news is that nine in ten people feel grateful, cared for, and supported when someone asks them if they’re OK.

At Gratitude Home Care, we see every day how powerful connection can be. A genuine conversation can provide comfort, strengthen relationships, and open the door to ongoing support. Sometimes, just knowing that someone cares enough to ask can make all the difference.

How to start the conversation

If you are unsure how to ask, R U OK? encourages us to follow four simple steps:

  1. Ask R U OK?: Pick the right time and place, and show you are ready to listen.
  2. Listen: Take what they say seriously, and don’t rush to offer solutions.
  3. Encourage action: Suggest helpful steps, whether it’s talking to a friend, a GP, or a support service.
  4. Check in: Follow up later to show you care and that they’re not alone.

💛 Remember, a conversation doesn’t have to be perfect. What matters is showing up with care and empathy.

You can make a difference

At Gratitude Home Care, we encourage everyone to look out for one another, not only today but every day. By starting meaningful conversations, we can create a stronger, more connected community where people feel supported and valued.
