New Government Agreement to Attract Aged Care Workforce – PR Skilled Visa Sponsorships | Aged Care Australia

The Albanese Government has announced a new Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement to promote increased recruitment and retention in the aged care workforce. The new agreement provides employers additional incentives to attract workers through sponsorship on skilled visas, a two-year pathway to permanent residency.

The agreement aims to address workforce shortages in the aged care sector, by adding direct care occupations in the aged care sector to the Skills Priority List. Growth of the aged care workforce will relieve pressure on residential aged care facilities that are struggling to meet the care minutes requirements.

World Parkinson’s Day | Aged Care Australia

Today we’re raising awareness for Parkinson’s disease.

Parkinson’s disease affects the nervous system, impairing mobility and is frequently accompanied by tremors, currently affecting approximately 219,000 Australians.

Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s share several symptoms and risk factors in common, but there is no connection between the two diseases.

A cure for Parkinson’s disease has yet to be found, so continuous support and funding for research of a cure is needed.

The Parkinson’s NSW website has a lot of resources, services, and support which can be found here: https://www.parkinsonsnsw.org.au/world-parkinsons-day-2023/

There are many ways to get involved, such as donating, fundraising, wills and bequests, raising awareness, and taking part in research.

Alzheimer’s Communication Guidelines | Aged Care Australia

Jo Huey, an Alzheimer’s disease advocate, developed “10 Absolutes” for carers in 1996. These guidelines are still valid 27 years later.

We want to share these communication guidelines to spread some information to assist those with loved ones living with Alzheimer’s or care workers. It’s good to have these tips in mind but everyone is different, and all you can do is try your best.

Covid Isolation in Nursing Homes | Aged Care Australia

In some nursing homes across Australia, seniors are put in isolation if another resident in the care home gets COVID-19. Instead of isolating the person with COVID-19, they isolate everyone.

Families are noticing that the health of loved ones are deteriorating as a result of the lack of interaction, stimulation, and exercise.

Some famalies are calling for a more flexible approach to regulations, so as to protect residents from the virus and at the same time let them have that stimulation to keep them from deteriorating and have quality of life.

Carer Wellbeing Survey | Aged Care Australia

Carers are responsible for taking care of large numbers of vulnerable Australians, providing often challenging and complex caring duties. Researchers and advocates want to know more about the care that is being provided and what type of support services are needed for the wellbeing of carers, ensuring carers in our community have a high quality of life while providing quality of life to the people they care for.

Carer feedback helps to enhance and shape national carer policy. Share your experience as a carer and help make a difference and go in the draw to win a gift card.

Australian Governement to fall short on nursing requirement promise | Gratitude In-Home Care | Aged Care Australia

The Australian Government admits that they will fall short on their promise that all nursing homes will have a registered nurse onsite 24 hours a day by July.

Ms. Wells stated that the government will collaborate with facilities that fear they will not achieve the nursing requirements by July, and that no facilities will be closed if they do not make the deadline.

Many nursing homes have voiced their concerns with fulfilling this requirement, especially in regional areas.

An estimated $5.4 billion funding boost for (2022-23) will be used to assist with fulfilling this requirement, as well as the 200 care minutes per resident in nursing homes, 44 minutes from a registered nurse.

For information about the requirements, visit the Department of Health and Aged Care website: https://www.health.gov.au/our-work/care-minutes-registered-nurses-aged-care/care-minutes

Health Benefits of Owning a Pet | Gratitude In-Home Care | Aged Care Australia

One study found that pets can aid people suffering from mental illnesses by easing loneliness, reducing stress, and providing a distraction. Another study found that pet owners had lower blood pressure than those that weren’t pet owners.

Pets, especially dogs motivate us to exercise, as dogs require regular exercise, which encourages their owners to exercise alongside them.

Pets also encourage us to form a routine around our pets.  Pets’ Consistent feeding times, playtime, walks, and exercise all contribute to a more structured day. Studies have shown that having a routine is beneficial for persons at risk of poor health, such as the elderly or those suffering from mental illness or other chronic health issues.

Pets can also be good for a person’s social health by encouraging us to have more social interaction with people in our community.
