World Glaucoma Week | Gratitude In-Home Care | Aged Care Australia

This week is world glaucoma week. We’re raising awareness to prompt everyone to have regular eye checks. Early detection of glaucoma is important to prevent vision loss.

People can get involved in a number of activities that are available throughout the week and there is a great deal of useful resources on glaucoma, which can be found here: https://www.worldglaucomaweek.org/

Optometrists recommend that people under the age of 61 get their eyes tested once every two years, while those over 61 get their eyes tested on a yearly basis.

Health Benefits of Owning a Pet | Gratitude In-Home Care | Aged Care Australia

One study found that pets can aid people suffering from mental illnesses by easing loneliness, reducing stress, and providing a distraction. Another study found that pet owners had lower blood pressure than those that weren’t pet owners.

Pets, especially dogs motivate us to exercise, as dogs require regular exercise, which encourages their owners to exercise alongside them.

Pets also encourage us to form a routine around our pets.  Pets’ Consistent feeding times, playtime, walks, and exercise all contribute to a more structured day. Studies have shown that having a routine is beneficial for persons at risk of poor health, such as the elderly or those suffering from mental illness or other chronic health issues.

Pets can also be good for a person’s social health by encouraging us to have more social interaction with people in our community.

Gardening and Home Maintenance (1)

Providers are required to maintain the care recipient’s home and garden in a condition of functional safety and provide an adequate level of security. Some minor home maintenance services can be provided where the person was previously able to carry out the activity themselves but can no longer do so due to their age-related functional decline.

However, general home services that were never, or are generally not completed independently prior to age-related functional decline, including home repairs/maintenance/specialist cleaning performed by a tradesperson or other licensed professional, are services that people are expected to cover out of their general income throughout their life regardless of age.

Some minor light gardening services can be provided where the person was previously able to carry out the activity themselves but can no longer do safely. For example maintaining access and egress pathways through a property, lawn mowing, weeding of established garden beds, yard clearance where there are issues of safety and access, and essential pruning for access areas.

Exclusions would be maintaining an entire garden, extensive tree or garden pruning, mulching gardens as these are beyond the scope and intent of the program.

Modifications must be for safety and accessibility reasons, recommended by a health professional operating within their scope of practice as recommended due to ageing related decline, not for aesthetic reasons and must not require development. Some parts of the renovation may be appropriate to be funded by the HCP (ambulant toilet) and the care recipient may be able to pay for the remainder parts using their own personal funds (e.g. heated towel rails would be an inappropriate use of Government funds).

Repair of internal flooring which is not related to improvement of ageing related functional impairment, is excluded from the HCP Program

Major Changes to Home Care Package Products and Services Claims | Inclusions and Exclusions | Gratitude In-Home Care

There are some major changes to the home care packages program operational manual which have come into effect in January and have changed the way many home care package holders use their funding. There are now a lot of exclusions for products and services that can be claimed using home care package funding.

Only products and services that are related to the care recipient’s ageing-related care needs apply can be purchased with a home care package.

For example,
• HCP funds can be used for allied health services but must only be used when the service is:
* required due to care recipient’s age-related functional decline or to assess the need for aids and equipment
* delivered by an accredited provider, and
* not concurrently being funded by another government program.

• Plumbing must only be provided to improve safety and accessibility and promote independence, for example removing shower hobs.

• Seniors that possess a home care package will no longer be able to get subsidised medication.

• Home care package holders can no longer claim for climate control expenses using their home care package.

• Objects like fridges, microwaves, kettles and other appliances can no longer able to be claimed using home care package funding unless they are specifically designed to tackle the challenges of arthritis, such as a kettle that doesn’t require you to lift or balance it while you pour water.

• Visits to the gym and pool are now excluded.

View the home care packages operational manual to view the entire list of inclusions and exclusions.
