Covid Isolation in Nursing Homes | Aged Care Australia

In some nursing homes across Australia, seniors are put in isolation if another resident in the care home gets COVID-19. Instead of isolating the person with COVID-19, they isolate everyone.

Families are noticing that the health of loved ones are deteriorating as a result of the lack of interaction, stimulation, and exercise.

Some famalies are calling for a more flexible approach to regulations, so as to protect residents from the virus and at the same time let them have that stimulation to keep them from deteriorating and have quality of life.

Carer Wellbeing Survey | Aged Care Australia

Carers are responsible for taking care of large numbers of vulnerable Australians, providing often challenging and complex caring duties. Researchers and advocates want to know more about the care that is being provided and what type of support services are needed for the wellbeing of carers, ensuring carers in our community have a high quality of life while providing quality of life to the people they care for.

Carer feedback helps to enhance and shape national carer policy. Share your experience as a carer and help make a difference and go in the draw to win a gift card.

Complete the survey on the Carers Australia websiteย here.ย

Australian Governement to fall short on nursing requirement promise | Gratitude In-Home Care | Aged Care Australia

The Australian Government admits that they will fall short on their promise that all nursing homes will have a registered nurse onsite 24 hours a day by July.

ย

Ms. Wells stated that the government will collaborate with facilities that fear they will not achieve the nursing requirements by July, and that no facilities will be closed if they do not make the deadline.

ย

Many nursing homes have voiced their concerns with fulfilling this requirement, especially in regional areas.

ย

An estimated $5.4 billion funding boost for (2022-23) will be used to assist with fulfilling this requirement, as well as the 200 care minutes per resident in nursing homes, 44 minutes from a registered nurse.

ย

For information about the requirements, visit the Department of Health and Aged Care website: https://www.health.gov.au/our-work/care-minutes-registered-nurses-aged-care/care-minutes

This week is world glaucoma week. Weโ€™re raising awareness to prompt everyone to have regular eye checks. Early detection of glaucoma is important to prevent vision loss.

People can get involved in a number of activities that are available throughout the week and there is a great deal of useful resources on glaucoma, which can be found here: https://www.worldglaucomaweek.org/

Optometrists recommend that peopleย under the age of 61 get their eyes tested once every two years, while those over 61 get their eyes tested on a yearly basis.

Health Benefits of Owning a Pet | Gratitude In-Home Care | Aged Care Australia

One study found that pets can aid people suffering from mental illnesses by easing loneliness, reducing stress, and providing a distraction. Another study found that pet owners had lower blood pressure than those that werenโ€™t pet owners.

Pets, especially dogs motivate us to exercise, as dogs require regular exercise, which encourages their owners to exercise alongside them.

Pets also encourage us to form a routine around our pets.ย  Petsโ€™ Consistent feeding times, playtime, walks, and exercise all contribute to a more structured day. Studies have shown that having a routine isย beneficial for persons at risk of poor health, such as the elderly or those suffering from mental illness or other chronic health issues.

Pets can also be good for a personโ€™s social health by encouraging us to have more social interaction with people in our community.

Gardening and Home Maintenance (1)

Providers are required to maintain the care recipientโ€™s home and garden in a condition of functional safety and provide an adequate level of security. Some minor home maintenance services can be provided where the person was previously able to carry out the activity themselves but can no longer do so due to their age-related functional decline.

However, general home services that were never, or are generally not completed independently prior to age-related functional decline, including home repairs/maintenance/specialist cleaning performed by a tradesperson or other licensed professional, are services that people are expected to cover out of their general income throughout their life regardless of age.

Some minor light gardening services can be provided where the person was previously able to carry out the activity themselves but can no longer do safely. For example maintaining access and egress pathways through a property, lawn mowing, weeding of established garden beds, yard clearance where there are issues of safety and access, and essential pruning for access areas.

Exclusions would be maintaining an entire garden, extensive tree or garden pruning, mulching gardens as these are beyond the scope and intent of the program.

Modifications must be for safety and accessibility reasons, recommended by a health professional operating within their scope of practice as recommended due to ageing related decline, not for aesthetic reasons and must not require development. Some parts of the renovation may be appropriate to be funded by the HCP (ambulant toilet) and the care recipient may be able to pay for the remainder parts using their own personal funds (e.g. heated towel rails would be an inappropriate use of Government funds).

Repair of internal flooring which is not related to improvement of ageing related functional impairment, is excluded from the HCP Program
